Marjoram was highly regarded by the ancient Greeks and Romans, who used it not only as a seasoning but also as a medicinal herb to relieve headaches and digestive issues.
Despite their similarities, marjoram is closely related to oregano but differs significantly in scent, being sweeter and less pungent. In botanical classification, marjoram (Origanum majorana) and oregano (Origanum vulgare) belong to the same genus.
In traditional European folklore, marjoram was considered a symbol of happiness and honor, and was frequently used in wedding wreaths. In medieval Germany, a marjoram wreath was placed on the heads of newlyweds as a wish for long-lasting happiness.
