The use of coffee in perfumery dates back to the 17th century, when the coffee trade flourished in Europe. It was initially used in blends of aromatic herbs before evolving into a staple of modern perfumery.
The roast level of coffee dramatically influences its scent profile. Light roasts highlight fruity and floral notes, while dark roasts produce deeper, smokier, and woody nuances.
Some of the most well-known fragrances featuring coffee notes include Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent, A*Men by Thierry Mugler, and Intense Café by Montale, where coffee blends with florals, sweet notes, or spices to create complex and captivating compositions.
