Civet musk is an ingredient used for oriental and leather notes in perfumery. It acts as a base ingredient and fixative that extends the longevity of a fragrance. Its use in modern perfumery is extremely limited due to ethical concerns regarding its derivation from the civet animal (family Viveridae, genus Viverra).
The primary aromatic compound obtained after extraction is civetone, while the absolute extract also contains musky substances such as Muscone and Exaltolide.
In modern perfumery, natural civet extract has been almost entirely replaced by synthetic bases and molecules that replicate its characteristic scent, maintaining the desired properties without the use of animal products.
