Description
Linalool is a terpene, a category of natural ingredients with a strong aroma produced by many plants. Scientists believe terpenes serve as a protective mechanism for plants by deterring animals from consuming them. Ironically, this substance that plants use as a deterrent has become a valuable ingredient in the fragrance industry. Perfumers often prefer laboratory-created identical versions of linalool, ensuring consistent quality and helping preserve natural resources. These lab versions can be produced from various renewable sources, making linalool a sustainable ingredient for the fragrance industry.

Additional information
- Linalool is found in more than 200 different plant species worldwide, ranging from exotic flowers to everyday culinary herbs.
- The name "linalool" comes from "linaloe", a type of wood from Mexico that was one of the earliest known sources of this aromatic substance. This wood was traditionally used to make musical instruments and aromatic objects.
- In the traditional medicine of many cultures, plants rich in linalool were used for their relaxing and calming properties. Modern research confirms that linalool may indeed have a mild sedative effect on the nervous system.

Linalool is a widely used and thoroughly evaluated fragrance ingredient. European Union scientific bodies have classified it as a potential skin sensitizer, meaning there is a possibility it may cause skin reactions (such as redness, rashes or itching). These reactions can be difficult to pinpoint and are equally likely to be caused by natural or synthetic ingredients. However, the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) has completed a formal safety assessment and concluded that linalool presents no concern for skin sensitization. Based on these findings, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has established standards for acceptable linalool concentrations in various consumer products. In addition, in an extensive skin testing study, 100 percent of participants reported no skin reaction to linalool.
