Grapefruit is a relatively new fruit in the citrus family, considered a natural hybrid between the pomelo and the sweet orange that emerged over the past few centuries.
The name grapefruit comes from the way the fruits grow on the tree in clusters resembling grapes, a characteristic that struck the first Europeans who observed it.
The first recorded mention of grapefruit took place in Barbados during the 18th century, where it was noted as the forbidden fruit before acquiring its current name and spreading to the rest of the world.
