Rose absolute is used primarily in fine perfumery for its characteristic rose scent. It contains a higher amount of phenyl ethyl alcohol compared to the essential oil, as this molecule has minimal affinity with water vapor. This explains the honeyed character of the absolute, in contrast to Rose de Mai essential oil.
Demand for Rose de Mai absolute far exceeds supply, with limited production presenting a significant challenge. In recent years, centifolia rose has become more accessible as more small producers acquire the necessary expertise, yet the waiting list to obtain it remains long.
The expertise of the Grasse region was recognized in late 2018 with its inclusion in the UNESCO cultural heritage list, principally for the cultivation of rose, jasmine, and tuberose. The rose is the flower of the rose bush, a shrub of the Rosaceae family and the Rosa genus.
