Pennyroyal held a significant place in ancient Greek and Roman medicine, where it was used to treat digestive disorders and respiratory problems.
The name "pennyroyal" comes from the old English word "pulioll-ryal", meaning "royal thyme", reflecting the esteem the herb enjoyed in medieval Europe.
Traditionally, pennyroyal was used as a natural insect repellent by farmers and travelers, who rubbed its leaves on their skin or placed small bunches of the plant on their clothes for protection against insects.
