Neryl acetate and geranyl acetate are chemical isomers, meaning they share the same molecular formula but have different structures, which gives them distinct aromatic properties.
The name neryl acetate connects to neroli oil, which was named after the 17th-century Princess of Nerola, Anna Maria de La Tremoille, who used orange blossom scent in her gloves and baths.
In perfumery, the difference in detection threshold between neryl acetate and geranyl acetate is crucial for perfumers, as a smaller quantity of geranyl acetate is needed to achieve a similar aromatic effect, influencing both formulation and cost.
