Economic value in Canada: In the province of Ontario, Canada, trappers can receive 10 to 40 dollars for each castor sac delivered to the Ontario Fur Managers Federation.
Castoreum comes from beaver glands located near the base of the animal's tail, which beavers historically used to mark their territory.
Beyond perfumery, castoreum has historically been used as a food additive, particularly in vanilla and raspberry flavoring, with FDA approval as a "natural flavoring".
