The name "Laminaria" comes from the Latin word "lamina", meaning "thin sheet" or "layer," in reference to the distinct morphology of this marine plant.
Beyond perfumery, Laminaria kelp has been used for centuries in the traditional medicine of various cultures, particularly in Asia, as well as an iodine- and mineral-rich food source.
The sustainable cultivation of Laminaria digitata is now a major sector of marine agriculture, with farms expanding primarily along the Atlantic coasts of Europe to provide a renewable source for the fragrance industry.
