Fennel has a long history in traditional medicine dating back to antiquity, where it was used to relieve stomach discomfort and as a natural diuretic.
There are two main types of fennel oil: bitter and sweet fennel oil. Bitter oil comes from the seeds and has a higher trans-anethole content, while sweet oil comes mainly from the fruits and has a sweeter, anise-like scent.
Ancient Greeks and Romans considered fennel a symbol of success and strength. Roman soldiers often consumed fennel before battle, believing it gave them courage and stamina.
