Nutmeg was once among the most prized spices in the world, with a value exceeding that of gold. It originates from the Banda Islands of Indonesia and was the subject of fierce trade wars among European powers during the 17th century.
Two different spices come from the same fruit of the nutmeg tree: nutmeg, which is the seed, and mace, which is the red webbing surrounding the seed. Although they come from the same plant, they have different scent profiles.
In the traditional medicine of various cultures, nutmeg was used to relieve digestive issues, headaches, and arthritic pain. In ancient Greek and Roman medicine, it was considered valuable for its therapeutic properties.
