Description
Mandarin essential oil is widely used in citrus blends for eaux de toilette and eaux fraîches. It features greener, medicinal, and bracing notes compared to sweet orange oil, adding variety to a fragrance top note. The main production region is Calabria in Italy, home to the highest quality mandarins.
Like all citrus oils, mandarin oil has photosensitising properties, so care is required when using products containing it on sun-exposed skin.
Production faces major challenges due to citrus greening disease, which is spread by the psyllid insect and attacks young shoots. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease, leading to premature tree death and a drop in both the quantity and quality of oil produced, including a noticeable decline in D-limonene levels.
Botanically, the mandarin is a fruit of the Rutaceae family and the genus Citrus, with a distinctive aroma that makes it recognizable and valuable in perfumery.
Additional information
The name mandarin comes from Chinese officials of the Qing dynasty, who were known as mandarins. Their bright orange robes matched the color of the fruit, giving rise to the name used today!
In many Asian countries, mandarins are seen as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. In China and Vietnam, gifting mandarins during the New Year is a traditional custom symbolizing happiness and wealth.
The harvest season greatly affects the scent of the mandarin essential oil. Early-harvested fruit yields an oil with greener notes, while fully ripe mandarins produce sweeter and richer aromas, making each batch unique.
