Menthone® is an ingredient used primarily to add minty notes to fragrances. It delivers a deep note with a licorice character alongside a sweet and frosty mint sensation. This ingredient helps balance the intense cooling effect that L-Menthol and L-Carvone bring to mint compositions.
L-Menthone can be produced naturally from dementholized corn mint essential oil. Compared to similar ingredients, Menthone® is less green than L-Carvone but cooler and more flavorful than L-Menthol, providing a balanced feel in fragrance compositions.
Menthone exists in two isomeric forms (L-Menthone and D-Menthone), with L-Menthone being the most commonly found in nature. This minor difference in molecular structure significantly affects the aromatic properties of the molecule.
When applied to the skin, Menthone activates TRPM8 receptors, which are responsible for sensing cold, creating a cooling sensation without an actual temperature change, an example of how scent can influence senses beyond smell.
Traditionally, mint oils containing Menthone were used in various cultures to help relieve headaches and stimulate mental clarity, long before scientists understood their chemical composition.
