Regulatory information
Patchouli oil is a thoroughly evaluated and widely used fragrance ingredient. Although essential oils like patchouli have been used for centuries in fragrance creation and are considered safe by many, they may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in certain individuals. These reactions can be difficult to pinpoint and are just as likely to be triggered by natural ingredients as by synthetic ones. The RIFM is currently developing an official safety assessment for patchouli oil, which is awaiting review by the Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety.
