Isomenthone is an ingredient used in limited amounts in perfumery due to the characteristic dirty note it imparts. It finds application primarily in functional perfumery for everyday products rather than fine fragrances.
Natural sources of Isomenthone include various mint species, with peppermint essential oil being one of the main ones. It is also found in geranium essential oil regardless of its geographical origin. Although it can be extracted from these raw materials, isolating it in high purity presents significant difficulties.
In modern fragrance compositions with mint notes, perfumers often prefer alternatives such as L-Menthol or L-Carvone, which offer cool or characteristic mint notes at a lower cost and without the unwanted notes of Isomenthone.
