Roughly 90 percent of orange oil consists of d-limonene, a specific terpene responsible for the characteristic citrus aroma.
Beyond perfumery, orange oil terpenes are widely used in cleaning products and as natural solvents thanks to their degreasing properties and pleasant scent.
The word terpene derives from turpentine, as these compounds were first isolated from conifer resin in the 19th century.
