Cis-5-octen-1-ol is a key ingredient in creating realistic apple scents in perfumery, helping creators reproduce the authentic feel of freshly cut fruit.
Although their origins differ, the natural and lab-produced molecules are chemically identical, meaning neither your body nor your nose can tell the difference.
The next time you smell a fresh apple, keep in mind that part of that characteristic aroma stems from the natural presence of cis-5-octen-1-ol in the fruit.
