Ionone family ingredients were discovered in the late 19th century and revolutionized perfumery by allowing the recreation of the violet scent in synthetic form for the first time. Methyl-alpha-ionone is one of the most popular members of this family.
Natural orris comes from iris roots that must cure for 3-5 years before yielding their precious aroma. Methyl-alpha-ionone offers an accessible alternative that yields similar woody and powdery notes.
The sustainable production of synthetic fragrance ingredients like methyl-alpha-ionone represents an important development in perfumery. Modern methods allow a reduction in environmental footprint of 65-80% compared to traditional production methods.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use. The status below reflects the IFRA data recorded for this ingredient. It is not a product certification and does not replace applicable law or assessment of the finished product.
IFRA categories group end uses by the type and level of exposure. A restriction or maximum concentration applies only to the stated category and does not automatically apply to another use. Check the related IFRA document for the applicable Standard version and its full conditions.
