Description
Additional information
Nutmeg and mace come from the same plant! Mace is actually the red, web-like aril covering the nutmeg seed, which is removed and dried separately.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, mace was as valuable as gold in trade, with the Dutch strictly controlling its production in the East Indies to maintain high prices.
Consuming large amounts of nutmeg can cause hallucinations and psychoactive effects due to its myristicin content, a property known since antiquity and used in various rituals.
