The etymology of pulegone derives from the Latin name for the pennyroyal plant (Mentha pulegium), which has been used for centuries for its aromatic properties.
Pulegone acts as a natural insect repellent, which explains why many plants containing it are traditionally used to deter mosquitoes and other insects.
Despite its small proportion in fragrance compositions, pulegone has a strong aromatic presence, as just a few molecules are enough to be detected by the human sense of smell, making it one of the most effective fragrance ingredients.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use.
