Cumin has a rich history spanning ancient civilizations. The Egyptians used it in mummification, while in ancient Greece and Rome it was so valuable that it was often stored in silver containers.
In the traditional medicine of various cultures, cumin has been used for centuries to soothe digestive issues, as a tonic, and to support the immune system.
Botanically, cumin (Cuminum cyminum) belongs to the Apiaceae family, the same family as parsley and carrots. The plant grows to a height of 30 to 50 centimeters and produces small pink or white flowers that yield the aromatic seeds.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use.
