Hyacinths in nature contain natural compounds with a chemical structure similar to 3-phenylbutanal, which explains why this synthetic ingredient can replicate their scent so faithfully.
The use of synthetic ingredients such as 3-phenylbutanal in perfumery is an important sustainability practice, since producing natural essential oils often requires huge amounts of plant matter. For example, about 1,000 hyacinth flowers are needed to yield a tiny amount of essential oil.
Perfumers use 3-phenylbutanal as a building block in many floral and green compositions, often combining it with other ingredients to create more complex fragrance profiles reminiscent of spring gardens.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use. The status below reflects the IFRA data recorded for this ingredient. It is not a product certification and does not replace applicable law or assessment of the finished product.
IFRA categories group end uses by the type and level of exposure. A restriction or maximum concentration applies only to the stated category and does not automatically apply to another use. Check the related IFRA document for the applicable Standard version and its full conditions.
