Nootkatone is used not only in fragrances but also as a natural insect repellent, proving particularly effective against mosquitoes and ticks. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved its use for this purpose.
The name nootkatone derives from the Nootka cypress (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis), a North American tree where the substance was first isolated, even though it is best known today for its presence in citrus fruits.
In the world of perfumery, nootkatone is considered a high-impact compound, meaning that even in extremely small amounts it can transform a fragrance by adding vibrancy and freshness.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use. The status below reflects the IFRA data recorded for this ingredient. It is not a product certification and does not replace applicable law or assessment of the finished product.
IFRA categories group end uses by the type and level of exposure. A restriction or maximum concentration applies only to the stated category and does not automatically apply to another use. Check the related IFRA document for the applicable Standard version and its full conditions.
