The name "neroli" comes from the Princess of Nerola, Anna Maria de La Trémoille, who popularized the scent in the 17th century by using it to perfume her gloves and bathwater.
Neroli oil production is demanding, requiring about 1,000 kilograms of blossoms to produce just 1 kilogram of pure oil, making it one of the more precious essential oils.
Traditionally, bitter orange blossoms were used in wedding ceremonies across many Mediterranean countries to symbolize purity and fertility, while their scent was believed to soothe the nervous system and calm pre-wedding nerves.
