Milky aromas in perfumery are often created by chemical compounds called lactones. These compounds have a cyclic structure that mimics natural molecules found in dairy products.
The laboratory synthesis of ingredients like butyl butyryllactate can be more environmentally friendly than extracting natural ingredients, as it requires fewer resources and does not affect natural ecosystems.
Milky aromas have a long history in perfumery, with their earliest recorded uses appearing in the early 20th century, when chemists began analyzing and reproducing the molecules that give dairy products their characteristic scents.
