Description
Ethylene brassylate is a musk-scented ingredient of high value in modern perfumery. It functions as an excellent base note and fixative in fragrance compositions, imparting notable longevity and rich depth to the final scent. Although historical musks originated from animal sources, perfumers today synthesize Ethylene brassylate in laboratories, ensuring consistent quality and animal protection. The industry increasingly relies on renewable raw materials for its production, supporting sustainability.
Additional information
- The development of synthetic musks such as Ethylene brassylate has played a decisive role in animal protection, replacing the use of natural musk from protected species.
- The cyclic molecular structure of Ethylene brassylate mimics natural musk compounds, offering a characteristic aroma and gradual release for greater longevity.
- The production of Ethylene brassylate has a significantly smaller environmental footprint than harvesting natural musk, especially when derived from renewable sources.

Regulatory information
Ethylene brassylate is an extensively evaluated and frequently used fragrance ingredient. It has been recognized by European Union scientific bodies as a potential skin sensitizer, meaning it could cause skin reactions such as redness, rashes or itching. These reactions can be difficult to pinpoint and are equally likely to be caused by natural as well as synthetic ingredients. However, the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) has completed an official safety assessment for this ingredient and concluded that ethylene brassylate is not a skin sensitizer and presents no safety concerns regarding skin reactions at typical use concentrations.
