l-Borneol has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is known as "Bing Pian" and has been used for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties for centuries.
Plants containing l-Borneol often feature vibrantly colored parts, ranging from bright orange carrots to green mint leaves and reddish spices like cardamom. This connection between intense color and aromatic compounds is an interesting natural phenomenon.
The sustainable production of l-Borneol in the lab requires significantly fewer natural resources than plant extraction. For example, producing one kilo of natural l-Borneol would require a massive amount of plant material, whereas laboratory synthesis dramatically reduces this footprint.
