The characteristic cooling sensation of peppermint oil comes from menthol, a compound that activates cold receptors in our skin to create a cooling effect without an actual change in temperature.
Peppermint oil is one of Europe's oldest medicinal herbs. Records of its use date back to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was used to relieve stomach discomfort and headaches.
The name "peppermint" comes from the Latin word "piper", meaning pepper, referring to the plant's mildly pungent taste combined with its cooling sensation.
