In ancient Rome, lemons were considered a luxury good and used exclusively by the upper social classes, while their cultivation was restricted to special gardens guarded by sentries.
The main component of lemon oil is limonene, which accounts for approximately 70% of its chemical composition and is responsible for the characteristic citrus scent.
In aromatherapy, lemon oil is frequently used for mood elevation and anxiety reduction, with studies indicating that inhaling lemon scent may increase the production of serotonin, the happiness hormone in the brain.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use.
