Tea tree oil has been used for thousands of years by Indigenous Australians, specifically the Bundjalung nation, who crushed the leaves to treat colds and skin conditions.
The name "tea tree" originated when Captain James Cook observed locals brewing an aromatic tea from its leaves in 1770 and named the plant accordingly, even though it has no relation to the tea plant we know today.
During World War II, tea tree oil was included in the official first aid kits of Australian soldiers due to its antiseptic properties, while munitions factory workers were given priority access to ensure protection against wound infections.
