The name isocyclocitral comes from its chemical structure, which includes a cyclic ring and relates to citral compounds. This molecular architecture is responsible for its characteristic scent.
Although it smells like a real flower shop, isocyclocitral is entirely synthetic and does not occur in nature. This paradox serves as an excellent example of how chemistry can perfectly mimic natural odors.
Fougère fragrances, where isocyclocitral is frequently used, have a history spanning over 140 years. This category was created in 1882 with Houbigant's Fougère Royale and revolutionized men's perfumery by introducing a new fragrance family that remains popular today.
The laboratory synthesis of fragrance ingredients like isocyclocitral contributes significantly to the sustainability of the perfume industry by reducing pressure on natural resources that would otherwise be harvested for fragrance production.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use. The status below reflects the IFRA data recorded for this ingredient. It is not a product certification and does not replace applicable law or assessment of the finished product.
IFRA categories group end uses by the type and level of exposure. A restriction or maximum concentration applies only to the stated category and does not automatically apply to another use. Check the related IFRA document for the applicable Standard version and its full conditions.
