Maturation period: Iris roots must be dried and aged for 3 to 5 years before they develop their characteristic scent. During this period, odorless iridoids transform into aromatic compounds that give orris root its unique profile.
Historical use: Orris root has been used in perfumery since ancient Egypt and Greece. During the Renaissance, it was a key component in pomanders, scented balls worn for protection against illness and unpleasant odors.
Precious ingredient: Orris butter, the concentrated root extract, is one of the most expensive natural ingredients in perfumery, with prices that can reach 50,000 euros per kilogram. It takes approximately 100 kilograms of dried root to produce just 1 kilogram of orris butter.
