White Oud is a substitute for traditional oud wood derived from the Aetoxylum sympetalum tree. It features a similar scent profile to authentic oud at a significantly lower cost, making it a common choice in the fragrance industry. The aroma is strongly woody, with animalic and smoky notes, much like new shoe soles.
The Aetoxylum sympetalum tree belongs to the Thymelaeaceae family and is often confused with Aquilaria species due to shared botanical traits. However, Aetoxylum is more common, grows faster and easier, and is considered less noble and rare than authentic oud.
In perfumery, White Oud is widely used in oriental, woody, chypre, and leather compositions. It is also known by the name Gaharu Buaya. Notably, it is sometimes sold deceptively as agarwood (authentic oud) at high prices, despite being a distinct ingredient.
