Pennyroyal is an ingredient used to impart fresh top notes to fragrances, featuring a strong and icy signature. As a member of the mint family, it has distinctive purple flowers and is extremely resilient, with the ability to grow even in very poor soils.
The pennyroyal used in perfumery is of European origin and should not be confused with American pennyroyal (Hedeoma pulegioides), as they are different species. In nature, it acts as a natural insect repellent, protecting other plants from aphid attacks.
An important characteristic of pennyroyal is its toxicity when used in excessive amounts. Dosage must be precise and controlled. For example, in aromatherapy, just 2 drops in 250ml of water are considered sufficient (LD50 = 0.4g/kg).
From a botanical perspective, pennyroyal is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family and the genus Mentha, sharing many characteristics with other mint species while maintaining its own unique aromatic profile.
