Description
Farnesene is an ingredient used in perfumery to bring fruity and green notes to compositions. It is especially noted for its ability to add a quince-like facet, making fruity notes greener and more vibrant. In addition, it enriches floral accords with freshness and depth.
Farnesene occurs naturally in various essential oils, including juniper berry, blue chamomile, lavender, and the absolute of sambac jasmine. This broad presence in natural oils contributes to the complexity and quality of fragrances that contain it.
From a chemical perspective, farnesene belongs to the terpene family. With 15 carbon atoms in its structure, it is classified as a sesquiterpene, much like beta-caryophyllene. This chemical structure accounts for the distinct aromatic properties it imparts to fragrance compositions.
Additional information
Farnesene is responsible for the characteristic aroma of green apples. In fact, it is a key component of the natural coating on apple skins, giving them their recognizable freshness.
The name "farnesene" originates from the Farnese family of Italy, a powerful Renaissance noble family. The Farnese Gardens in Rome were renowned for their aromatic plants, linking the name to the world of fragrance.
In certain insects, farnesene functions as an alarm pheromone. When an insect comes under attack, it releases this substance to warn other members of the colony about danger, showing how nature utilizes the very same molecules we value for their scent.
