The safety of heptanal, 6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethyl- has been evaluated by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), and a related scientific study has been published. Multiple investigations into its use at normal concentrations showed no evidence of skin irritation. However, a potential for skin sensitization was noted at concentrations much higher than those used in everyday products.
To prevent sensitization, RIFM has established a maximum acceptable concentration level, and the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has issued safe-use standards for home and personal care products. Although an ingredient may have the potential for skin sensitization, most people will not be affected. Every skin type is different, so consult a healthcare professional with any questions.
