Salicylaldehyde belongs to the same family of chemical compounds as aspirin! It is chemically related to salicylic acid, the active substance from which aspirin is derived, and they share a similar molecular structure.
The insects that produce salicylaldehyde, such as certain species of beetles, use it as a defense mechanism to repel predators. When threatened, they release this compound, which has a strong odor and an unpleasant taste for aspiring predators.
In the world of fragrances, salicylaldehyde is a key component of the fougère fragrance family, a classic category of primarily men's fragrances that combines cool, green notes with warm, balsamic bases.
