Pine is a key ingredient in woody and masculine fragrances, offering a fresh, functional, and distinctive woody note with vibrant touches. The botanical distinction between pine and fir lies in how their needles are arranged: on pine trees, needles grow in clusters along the branches, whereas on fir trees, they attach individually.
Pine essential oil contains various terpenes, such as pinene and carene, which are also extracted from turpentine oil. From an olfactory perspective, there are notable differences among species:
- Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) has a livelier scent reminiscent of lime.
- Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica) has a more functional scent reminiscent of detergent.
Scots pine belongs to the Pinaceae family and the Pinus genus, and it stands out as one of the most widely used pine species in perfumery for its distinct properties.
