Historical medicinal use: Cubeb pepper was used in the traditional medicine of the Middle East and Asia for centuries, particularly for addressing respiratory and urogenital conditions. In medieval Europe, it was so sought after for its therapeutic properties that it often cost more than common pepper!
Cubeb pepper originates mainly from Indonesia, specifically the island of Java, where it has been cultivated for centuries. Its cultivation later spread to other regions of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
The scent of cubeb pepper is a unique combination of spicy and woody notes with subtle undertones reminiscent of cardamom and nutmeg. Unlike black pepper, which delivers immediate heat, cubeb develops a more complex and aromatic flavor that evolves gradually on the palate.
