Menthol tricks our brain by activating the same receptors that detect cold (TRPM8), creating a cooling sensation without actually changing the temperature.
Ancient Egyptians and Greeks used mint, which contains menthol, for medicinal purposes 3,000 years ago, recognizing its invigorating and soothing properties.
Menthol can reduce the perception of heat from spicy foods, as its cooling effect counteracts the sensation of warmth, which is why many cuisines pair mint with spicy dishes.
