Consumption of Palmaria palmata dates back centuries in coastal communities of Ireland, Iceland, and other Atlantic regions, where it served as an important food source during times of scarcity.
This seaweed has earned the nickname "sea bacon" due to the distinctive umami flavor it develops when cooked, reminiscent of smoked meat.
From a nutritional standpoint, Palmaria palmata contains more iron than spinach and is extremely rich in iodine, covering daily needs with just a small amount.
