Clary sage, one of the natural sources of linalyl formate, has been used in perfumery since antiquity and was especially popular in medieval Europe for its aromatic and therapeutic properties.
Esters like linalyl formate play a key role in creating fruity notes in fragrances. A single molecule of linalyl formate can significantly enhance the sense of freshness in a scent, even at very low concentrations.
Producing linalyl formate in the lab helps protect wild clary sage populations, since roughly 100 kilograms of plant matter are required to yield just one kilogram of natural oil.
