Benzoin has been used for centuries in Asian traditional medicine to treat respiratory conditions and skin problems, and as an antiseptic.
The name "benzoin" has Arabic origins from the term "luban jawi", meaning "incense of Java", as Arab traders transported this resin from Southeast Asia.
In perfumery, benzoin acts as a natural preservative, extending the shelf life of fragrances and stabilizing volatile notes, which is why it is frequently used as a base ingredient in complex scent compositions.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use. The status below reflects the IFRA data recorded for this ingredient. It is not a product certification and does not replace applicable law or assessment of the finished product.
