Natural vanilla comes from the pods of the Vanilla planifolia plant, whereas synthetic vanilla fragrances created in a laboratory can be produced with a much smaller environmental footprint since cultivating natural vanilla requires extensive natural resources.
Our brain recognizes the scent of vanilla through specialized olfactory receptors that respond to vanillin and similar chemical compounds. This explains why synthetic vanilla fragrances can trigger the same sensory experience as natural vanilla.
Vanilla has been used in perfumery for more than 400 years, with the Aztecs among the first to recognize its unique aroma. Today, vanilla-scented ingredients are a staple in over 60 percent of women's fragrances.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use. The status below reflects the IFRA data recorded for this ingredient. It is not a product certification and does not replace applicable law or assessment of the finished product.
IFRA categories group end uses by the type and level of exposure. A restriction or maximum concentration applies only to the stated category and does not automatically apply to another use. Check the related IFRA document for the applicable Standard version and its full conditions.
