Dihydro-α-terpineol belongs to the terpene family, one of the most widespread groups of natural compounds in the plant kingdom. These compounds are responsible for many of the scents found in nature.
This ingredient is related to compounds used for centuries in essential oils for traditional healing practices across various cultures, from the Mediterranean to Asia.
Laboratory production of Dihydro-α-terpineol serves as an example of a sustainable approach in the fragrance industry. Producing the natural version would require large quantities of citrus fruit, whereas the synthetic version delivers the same scent with a significantly smaller environmental footprint.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use.
