Carvacrol makes up to 70 percent of oregano essential oil, making it one of the most important components giving oregano its characteristic scent. It has been extensively studied for its antimicrobial properties.
Chemically, carvacrol belongs to the family of monoterpenoid phenols, a class of organic compounds often found in essential oils that contribute significantly to the scent and flavor of many herbs.
Plants rich in carvacrol were used for centuries in the traditional medicine of various cultures, from the Mediterranean to Asia, for their healing properties, long before scientists isolated and identified the specific compound.
