Description
Geraniol is a natural fragrance ingredient found in the essential oils of various plants, including rose, palmarosa, and citronella. It imparts a distinct floral scent to aromatic products and ranks among the most widespread ingredients in the fragrance industry. Beyond the aforementioned plants, geraniol also occurs in diverse natural sources such as apples, basil, bay leaves, black tea, mint, blackberries, blood oranges, and cardamom. A particularly interesting characteristic of geraniol is its use by honeybees, which secrete it as a natural scent to mark nectar-rich flowers and to locate the entrances to their hives.

Regulatory information
Geraniol has been thoroughly evaluated as a fragrance ingredient. European Union scientific bodies have classified it as a potential skin sensitizer, meaning it may cause skin reactions (such as redness, rashes, or itching) in certain individuals. These reactions can be difficult to pinpoint and may be triggered equally by natural and synthetic ingredients. The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) has completed an official safety assessment for this ingredient. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has established standards for acceptable concentrations of geraniol in various consumer products. In an extensive patch-test study, 99.5% of participants reported no reaction to geraniol.
