Wormwood is the main ingredient in absinthe, the famous alcoholic drink associated with 19th-century artists and writers such as Van Gogh and Hemingway, which earned the nickname "the green fairy".
In ancient Egypt and Greece, wormwood was used to treat parasites, fevers, and digestive problems, and it is also mentioned in ancient medical texts by Dioscorides.
The name wormwood appears in the Bible as a symbol of bitterness and sorrow, and in the Book of Revelation it is mentioned as a star that falls to earth and bitters the waters.
