Lichens are one of the most striking examples of symbiosis in nature, representing neither plants nor animals, but the combination of two different organisms living as one!
Oak moss has been used in perfumery since the 16th century, when early perfumers discovered its unique properties for creating deep, earthy fragrances with a distinct woodland profile.
Oak moss lichens grow extremely slowly, at just 0.5 to 2 millimeters per year, and can live for hundreds of years, making them one of the longest-lived organisms on the planet.
The IFRA Standards form an industry self-regulatory system. They may prohibit or restrict the use of particular fragrance ingredients, or set specifications, according to end use. The status below reflects the IFRA data recorded for this ingredient. It is not a product certification and does not replace applicable law or assessment of the finished product.
IFRA categories group end uses by the type and level of exposure. A restriction or maximum concentration applies only to the stated category and does not automatically apply to another use. Check the related IFRA document for the applicable Standard version and its full conditions.
